Betty

Betty thought it would be nice to share some memorable moments and stories of her life in Shelties… from when she first got started in 1989 to a more recent event involving the search and rescue of one of her dog’s who went missing.

THE EARLY YEARS

I started in shelties with the purchase of my first littke sable female that I named "KRICKET" (later known as Ch. Marni-Maureen's Kimmy Kricket, C.D)

She was very first purebred dog and I was proud as punch of her!  Oh, how I loved this little girl... she opened up a whole new world for me and my daughter, Kim, who was nine years old at the time.

We did obedience with her, took her to every sanction match we could, and then once we had gained confidence, started showing her for "real"!  We were hooked, both line and since in the dog world of showing. Kim soon became my groomer and handler extraordinaire and has finished over 35 championships on either our dogs or puppies we have sold.

Pictured below is my first three dogs (1989) Kricket, Macho, and Shanti...

THE PIANO PLAYER

One of my favourite dogs was Promise... She was a fanatic about playing the piano.  When company would come over, or if someone even touched the piano, she would run as fast as she could from wherever she was in the house to jump frantically at the keys and sing as loud as she could.  The more someone laughed, the faster she jumped and the louder she sang.  Not surprisingly one of her ancestors is the well known bi-black, Ch. Macdega the Piano Man.

Shea’s Story…

On October 17, 2007, my young sable male, Shea, Ch. Amberlyn's A Work of Art, went missing from his backyard in a rural municipality outside of Winnipeg.  It was a difficult time to say the least, but many of our friends within the sheltie community here in Manitoba really came to our aid in full force to bring my boy home.

They came together not only with their help in searching but their non-stop encouragement and prayers to keep the faith and hope that we would find him.

After 11 gruelling days of walking ditches, trucking through fields and searching the countryside, we finally were able to capture Shea on the run.  This feat was accomplished by a dedicated and fearless drive through freshly harvested fields, and then a leap and land on top of the wee little dog who was desperately running for his life (or so he thought).  I thank you Brett Murray and Kerry Nemet for a spectacular display of roundup.

The many hours of daily searching was done by many members of WASSA as well as other Sheltie people with the posters being distributed to each and every farmer and house along the way and may miles of driving up and down muddy roads in the country, all of which led to the recover of this wayward boy.

Other than being very tired, down to the skin and bone, and covered in prickly burrs, Shea seemed none the worse for wear,  He has since been shaved of his burdensome burs and given a fresh bath.  He is not sitting in the lap of luxury and eating four meals a day.  I think he likes it!

THANK YOU SHELTIE PEOPLE OF MANITOBA for coming together and sticking together until the end was seen with the capture of Shea... God Bless You All!
